Kalamna - The Digital Archive of the Arab-Jewish Heritage
Kalmana (Kolmusino) – a long-term project, in the making, whose goal is to document and preserve the Arab-Jewish heritage of the modern era, in all its shades and spellings. As part of the effort to preserve the language and linguistic culture that is becoming extinct (faster than Yiddish).
The main points of the project:
The materials were released to the general public on the web site, which will display the materials after they have been scanned, as well as the catalog, the database, references and links to websites, and relevant research information.
The materials will be collected from existing digital archives, and mainly from private parties looking for a home for the family and community heritage.
The National Library – will assist in the preservation of the physical materials in a dedicated archive that will be allocated for the benefit of the project.
The concentration of the materials in one place, cataloging and classifying them according to communities of origin, time, space, and linguistic and orthographic characteristics is of great value in itself for the study of the language, heritage and history of the Arabic-speaking Jewish communities.
In order to implement these ambitions, the project will also engage in research and development of tools that will assist in extracting information and text from the documents as well as supplementing and enriching information from external sources.
We will strive to achieve a transcription and translation of the materials (either with the assistance of researchers or the development of dedicated computer tools). In this way we will be able to provide a valid textual corpus of Arabic-Jewish in all its shades.
The project aims, first and foremost, to serve as an address for private individuals and families – who are looking for a home for documents and certificates that have been passed down in the family and are now decaying in boxes.
The site and the archive will serve as a home that sees every document in Jewish-Arabic as invaluable, whether it is a letter or a grocery list.
The site will serve as a knowledge and contact center to help decipher the documents.
